Nationwide Center for the Promotion of Children with Special Needs
The Jerusalem Variety Center was established on land allocated by the Jerusalem Municipality and was opened in 1994. The aim of the center is to promote and improve work methods in the location, assessment, rehabilitation, extra-curricular activity, treatment, consultation and follow up regarding children with special needs and their family members. This population includes children with congenital physical / mental disabilities and children at risk.
The center provides services in the following areas: developmental and didactic assessment, extra-curricular activities, a pedagogic center, training and advanced studies, a learning disabilities framework, integrated day centers and kindergartens, recreation activities and summer camps for children with special needs.
Approx. $20 million were invested in the center's construction, raised from various donors in Israel and overseas.
The Center’s Activities:
The Rehabilitating and Enrichment Center
The center treats children with special needs from all sectors, from kindergarten age to junior high-school age. The center operates various extra-curricular activities, based upon the various needs of each target population. The multi–faceted activity is constructed to suit and adapt to each child and to his/her unique needs.
In addition, the center maintains a club for autistic children, which operates three times a week in the evening. In addition, day-camps for children with special needs are held during school vacations.
Integrated Kindergartens
In accordance with the containment philosophy, the uniqueness of these kindergartens is in the fact that children with special needs are able to receive all of their paramedical treatments in one place on the one hand, while being integrated in their home class throughout the day on the other hand.
The children receive group treatments – extra-curricular activities in small groups: music, drama, driving guidance, pet corner, etc.
Retardation and Learning Disabilities Assessment Center
The center holds assessments of retardation and learning disabilities for children up to the age of 14 years at the Jerusalem district.
The purpose of these assessments is to determine whether the child is retarded and to what degree, in order to enable the child's family to receive the services to which they are entitled.
Study Center
Intended for students, who wish to improve their scholastic achievements. The center holds enhancement classes in several fields.
The Center's staff constructs a personal program for each child, including follow-up in collaboration with the school. The center is open four days a week in the afternoon.
